Teen dating abuse may be physical, sexual, financial, verbal or emotional in nature.While abuse often occurs as a pattern of controlling behavior, a single episode of abuse is cause for concern.

However, reacting strongly or suddenly to any situation could cause your child to shut down and further isolate themselves from the safe people in their lives.

Signs that a teen may be a victim of an abusive relationship: If your teen does not choose to talk, they may still be listening.

Ask if they would be more comfortable talking with someone else, such as a counselor, coach, friend or another trusted person. Most teens find it helpful to have added support when facing this kind of danger or intimidation.

An NIJ-funded study of teens from 10 middle schools and high schools throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania examined help-seeking rates among teens.

The prevalence of help-seeking among teens who reported at least one form of psychological, physical, sexual or cyber abuse was fairly low: 8.6 percent of all victims, 5.7 percent of male victims and 11.0 percent of female victims.

The RICADV's network of member agencies provide comprehensive services to victims, including emergency shelter, support groups, counseling, and assistance with the legal system.
